The highly-anticipated remake of Stephen King’s Carrie began filming last month in Toronto and thanks to Bloody Disgusting, we now have our first look at behind the scenes footage from the film.
The clip gives us a glimpse of a scene by what appears to be a school pool where Carrie looks uncomfortably out of place and is told by another girl to “wipe that smile off your face.” Ah, the savagery of teenage girls at its finest.
The original 1976 film is widely considered to be one of the most successful King adaptations of all time, making this remake a daunting task for director Kimberly Peirce, especially considering this will only be her third feature film. While it’s hard to say if the film will turn out to be successful, I can say that I love what they’ve done with the casting.
Chloe Moretz is a phenomenal young actress who delivers a great performance every time she’s on screen. Between her roles as a kick-ass superhero and as a vampire, she’s already killed more people at age 15 than most actresses get to in a lifetime. Her performance in Let Me In certainly must have factored in to her casting here, as her sad, yet creepy and haunting character from that film should translate quite well into Carrie.
I’m also excited to see Alex Russell in the role of Billy Nolan. We haven’t seen much of the actor so far but he was very enjoyable to watch in Chronicle and hopefully he will be able to continue his success with Carrie, despite stepping into the huge shoes of John Travolta.
Casting aside, I am a bit skeptical about this remake. Although Moretz has said the new script is very different from the original, the original is a great horror film and I don’t know if the changes will necessarily be for the better. Then again, I’m never opposed to seeing King’s work translated to the big screen.
For those who haven’t already seen the original, the film’s description is included below:
The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc.
Carrie will hit theaters on March 15th, 2012.
