There has been an awakening – and we’re not talking about that of the Force. As promised, 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first official trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and it’s one that sees Oscar Isaac’s glowering big bad awaken from his slumber.
Yes, ’tis the season for studios to roll out a slew of trailers for 2016’s heavy-hitters, and while it was initially expected to premiere alongside The Force Awakens next week – a spot gobbled up by Paramount’s sequel Star Trek Beyond – we now have our first genuine look at Bryan Singer’s hotly-anticipated threequel.
Opening with Jean Grey (Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner) experiencing a vivid dream that involves the end of days, today’s trailer is an assault on the senses, as the power and magnitude of Apocalypse slowly becomes apparent. Forcing mutants to bend to his will, Isaac’s monolithic, age-old deity is ready to tear the world asunder, and anyone – or anything – standing in his way is simply an obstacle to be destroyed.
[zergpaid]Rounding out the prequel trilogy under the X-Men umbrella, Apocalypse has mighty big shoes to fill given the success of Days of Future Past, though by resurrecting an ancient, all-powerful villain in Isaac and a star-studded cast, we have full confidence that Singer’s follow-up can stand alongside the 2014 box office juggernaut – if not emulate it.
Speaking of which, Isaac’s cantankerous deity is seemingly a force to be reckoned with. After pulling together his Four Horsemen, the film’s chief antagonist will set about wiping out man and mutantkind alike. On the topic of the actor’s performance, co-star Nicholas Hoult heaped praised on Isaac’s turn.
“That character’s a tricky one to play, you know, essentially a mutant from an era long ago, awoken in this modern day, very confused about what’s been going on around him and decides to do something about it. He certainly brings an intensity to it, in a great way.”
Also starring Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Oscar Isaac as the title big bad, X-Men: Apocalypse is due to roar into theaters on May 27, 2016.

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”
