Cast one eye over Samuel L. Jackson’s long and celebrated résumé and you’ll soon find that, even though the actor has starred in some of the best films ever made — Pulp Fiction, in particular — there are some critical duds that somewhat balance the scale. Films such as Snakes on a Plane and Deep Blue Sea were widely panned, yet still managed to carve out an audience thanks to their bizarre plot and yet more bizarre dialogue. And going off of the first trailer for Big Game, the Finnish film could join that, er, echelon.
Playing the President of the United States, Big Game will see Jackson stranded in the woodlands of Finland after he is attacked on Air Force One. Cue questions of corruption and double-crossing. With only a young boy to call a friend — played here by Onni Tommila — the absurd scenario soon gets much, much worse as the American army along with several groups of terrorists make it their bidding to hunt down the wayward POTUS.
Without question, it’s a ridiculous premise, and the trailer itself sports this absurdity without a single stick of shame. Plus, given that this is from the creative minds that brought us Rare Exports — arguably one of the strangest, yet oddly enjoyable Christmas films out there — moviegoers should know what they’re getting into before venturing out to see Jackson’s latest.
