After Ben Affleck‘s success with his first two directorial films Gone Baby Gone and The Town, he had his pick at half a dozen high-profile scripts for his third outing. The director eventually settled on Argo and today, we have the first trailer for the film.

The trailer will be attached to Dark Shadows when it is released later this week but it has appeared online this morning and we have it below for your viewing pleasure.

To be honest, it looks fantastic and though it is incredibly dramatic and most definitely a thriller, there’s a nice level of comedy which we haven’t seen in Affleck’s direction before. Affleck also seems to have a great attention to detail as the 70’s time period is re-created wonderfully. What’s even more exciting is the film’s cast, which is nothing short of “all-star.”

All things considered, Argo is set to be a major contender comes Awards season. Ben has proven himself behind the camera with Gone Baby Gone and The Town and now it’s time to take him seriously. Will he go 3-for-3?

Argo stars Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Zeljko Ivanek, Scoot McNairy and Kyle Chandler and will be released on October 12th, 2012.

Check out the trailer for Argo below.

“The film chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis–the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.”
