Rupert Friend means business. In the very first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Hitman: Agent 47, we see the Homeland star blast his way through just about everything in a bid to expose the malevolent corporation that brought him into existence.
Based on the long-running video game franchise of the same name, Agent 47’s latest outing has been described as a total reboot, kicking any of the lore established through Timothy Olyphant’s role as the titular assassin back in 2009 to the kerb. In starting afresh, the studio has placed Aleksander Bach at the helm of the adaptation, and the cast is to be rounded out by American Horror Story‘s Zachary Quinto, Hannah Ware, Thomas Kretschmann and Ciaran Hinds.
Initially slated to release this month, 20th Century Fox opted to postpone Hitman: Agent 47 back several months and into the more primetime summer blockbuster season. Still, the studio’s latest actioner will have to overcome the stigma of video game adaptations if Bach’s film is to be a hit with the masses.
Rupert Friend won’t let anyone or indeed anything stand in his way when Hitman: Agent 47 explodes onto the scene on August 28. For now, you can share your early impressions of the film’s maiden trailer down below.
HITMAN: AGENT 47 centers on an elite assassin who was genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, and is known only by the last two digits on the barcode tattooed on the back of his neck. He is the culmination of decades of research and forty-six earlier Agent clones — endowing him with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. His latest target is a mega-corporation that plans to unlock the secret of Agent 47′s past to create an army of killers whose powers surpass even his own. Teaming up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their powerful and clandestine enemies, 47 confronts stunning revelations about his own origins and squares off in an epic battle with his deadliest foe.
