Barbie fans have been waiting months to finally see the iconic character’s big screen debut and now that it’s finally here, it seems this hype wasn’t just for nothing, everybody is loving it.
Premiering in Los Angeles earlier today, the first reactions to Barbie are overwhelmingly positive. So if you’ve been worrying about the movie failing to capture the magic, you can relax.
Those who were at the premiere had a lot to praise including the film’s fun story and cast, with some going as far as to suggest the film should be in consideration for the Oscars. As expected, the most praise has gone to Barbie’s two leading stars, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
One critic praised the film as a “pitch-perfect script backed by great performances,” and this sentiment is echoed in other reactions. Another says that while the story is simple, thanks to the filmmaking of Greta Gerwig, the result is infused with plenty of emotion and comedy.
If you’ve seen the ads and been a little hesitant to pull the trigger and make your plans to head out and see Barbie in theaters given its campy nature, it seems there is a lot more to the movie than that. The film is described by one audience member as “mature, very meta, and goes to places” that many wouldn’t expect the film to tackle.
Of course, this wall of praise comes off the back of the premiere. We won’t know for sure what the true judgment of the film is until reviews surface and fans get their chance to enjoy the movie next week.
If you’re eager to get out and see Barbie, the film will land in theaters around the globe on July 21.
