Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg impressed many a horror fan with the release of Lights Out, his directorial debut spun out from a short film of the same name. It even wowed the vast majority of critics, pulled in more than $160 million worldwide, and earned a sequel order from New Line.
But before being drawn back into the cult series, Sandberg has the small matter of helming a high-profile spinoff to tackle, and it goes by the name of Annabelle 2. Nipping at the heels of yesterday’s tease, we now have our grubby paws on the inaugural teaser for the 2017 feature – and yes, it heralds the return of the titular doll in typically creepy fashion.
Starring Miranda Otto, Anthony LaPaglia and Stephanie Sigman, the snippet above doesn’t necessarily offer up anything substantial, but lean closely and you can hear Otto’s lead call out Annabelle’s name. Could we about to delve deeper into the history of the Higgins family? Whatever the outcome, the power of an outstretched crucifix is no match for the demonic transformation at hand.
Here’s the logline: “Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.”
New Line Cinema will summon Annabelle 2 into theaters on May 19, 2017, when Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard, Grace Fulton, Lou Lou Safran, Samara Lee, Anthony LaPaglia and Tayler Buck will complete the ensemble. As things stand, David F. Sandberg’s horror sequel will be opening opposite Dwayne Johnson and his Baywatch crew.
