Even among fans of The Last Jedi, Finn’s tangential adventure with Rose is often singled out as the film’s weakest, most extraneous plotline, but with J.J. Abrams back on directing duties, it’s possible that John Boyega will be playing a more prominent part in the action with next year’s Star Wars: Episode IX. In fact, in a callback to the climax from The Force Awakens, we may be seeing the former stormtrooper wielding a lightsaber once more.
The basis for this newly circulating prediction is a recent social media exchange between Boyega and a fan, with the latter posting the following comment about the upcoming trilogy-closer:
“Hopefully my man [John Boyega] will truly shine in IX and the Finn character will be shown as the badass hero I’ve been waiting for him to be since VII.
..and hopefully he’ll wield a saber again..”
The actor replied with a tease of things to come:
“We’ve got you in this one bro! TRUST me!”
You can certainly see why some fans are reading into this response as confirmation that Finn will be picking up the saber once more, even if the star may simply be referring to the “badass hero” part of the previous tweet. Either way, with Abrams set to bring this current Star Wars trilogy to a close, it’s likely that the filmmaker will be bringing a degree of symmetry to the saga, which surely means a few nods to The Force Awakens.
In related news, a few weeks ago Boyega revealed via Instagram that he’d flown into Jordan to shoot some scenes, and there’s a good chance his trip has something to do with the set we saw in the desert region of Wadi Rum. The barren layout of this location has led to some speculation that a return to Jakku is on the cards, but we’ll find out for sure when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
