The sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo has been in the works for some time now, but not many details about the film or its plot had been released. That changed today though as Disney has now released the title image and some plot details for Finding Dory, officially confirming that the film will indeed happen.
Check out the release from Disney below.
“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”
Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” said Stanton. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”
According to Stanton, “Finding Dory” takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.
Twelve years is a really long time between sequels, but hopefully, as DeGeneres claims, the script is awesome and the sequel will be well worth the wait. It’ll be interesting to see how much this film is targeted to children seeing as the majority of people who were kids when the first film released will be in their twenties or even thirties by the time 2015 rolls around.
It’s good to see that DeGeneres is back, and she will be joined by Albert Brooks. Nemo will likely have to be recast considering Alexander Gould is now 18-years-old. That’s assuming that the film doesn’t pick up with the characters having aged 12 years, which I think is safe to assume considering the life expectancy for a clown fish is only 6 to 10 years (sorry if that makes anyone feel really depressed).
I’m also glad that Stanton is directing again. He did wonders with the first film, and created one of the most beloved animated films of the 21st century. I see no reason why he won’t do something similar with the sequel.
That being said, I’m always a bit hesitant about animated sequels, especially when they come so far down the line. While the Toy Story sequels are exceptional, sometimes it’s better to just let a film be a stand-alone entity. Making another film with the same characters opens the door to tarnishing the film’s legacy.
Finding Dory is slated to hit theaters November 25, 2015. In the meantime, there’s nothing else to do other than to just keep swimming.
