With Star Trek Into Darkness hitting theatres May 17th, we’ve got just over a month to go until we finally get to see J.J. Abrams’ sequel to his 2009 sci-fi hit. Today, the final trailer for the film arrives on the web and it’s definitely the most dramatic one we’ve seen.

The trailer starts with Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) giving Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) the familiar warning that we’ve heard in previous trailers. Then John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) comes in, and things get real very fast. Explosions, panic, death, and all out war ensue, sending Kirk on a revenge mission (against the wishes of many around him) to “get this son of a bitch.”

The footage in this one is stunning, and the destruction is shown on a grand scale. The Enterprise looks to take a ton of damage, so the trailer isn’t for devoted Trekkies who are faint of heart. And as Cumberbatch sneers at the end, “no ship should go down without her captain.”

This trailer may be the best one we’ve seen for the film. Admittedly, everything else pales in comparison to the 10-minute IMAX preview that was shown a while ago but if you weren’t able to see that in its intended IMAX format, then this trailer is the next best thing. It really sets the tone, and the stakes, for the story that Abrams has put in place.

Star Trek Into Darkness lands in theatres nationwide May 17th. The film also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin & John Cho. The screenplay for this sequel was written by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman & Damon Lindelof.
