When a film teeters on the edge of becoming a global phenomenon, you can readily expect that a parody flick is right around the corner. And true enough, eager to capitalize on the aftermath of Focus Features’ racy Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, Marlon Wayans has reteamed with screenwriter Rick Alvarez and director Michael Tiddes for Fifty Shades of Black.
To prove it’s actually a thing with a theatrical release date to call its own, today brings forth the first red band trailer for Tiddes’ spoof, which takes swipes and jabs at Fifty Shades of Grey at every turn. There’s scant original humor to be found in the snippet and in reality, the window to poke fun at E. L. James and Sam Taylor-Johnson’s terribly po-faced romance is beginning to close rapidly, particularly considering that Universal isn’t planning to debut Fifty Shades Darker until 2017.
Either way, Fifty Shades of Black has recruited a who’s who roster of actors that specalize in this brand of light-hearted fun, with Wayans being joined by Kali Hawk (Bridesmaids), Mike Epps (The Hangover), Andrew Bachelor (We Are Your Friends), Affion Crockett (Pixels, The Wedding Ringer), Fred Willard (Anchorman), Florence Henderson and Jane Seymour
Fifty Shades of Black has been assigned to a late January release which, at least on paper, doesn’t necessarily ascribe any lofty box office expectations to Michael Tiddes’ spoof flick. It’ll open on January 29, and you can gauge whether or not it’s worth your time via the trailer above.
