We’d be doing the franchise a disservice to say that it doesn’t make a great deal of sense at the best of times, but Fast X in particular appears to be going retcon crazy after Brie Larson confirmed the identity of her mysterious new character Tess.
It was revealed in the first full-length trailer that Jason Momoa’s Dante was actually the son of Joaquim de Almeida’s Hernan Reyes from the fifth installment, making him the latest long-lost family member connected to an established figure that’s shown up out of absolutely nowhere with a desire for vengeance having never been seen or mentioned before.
It was pretty much the same role fulfilled by John Cena in Fast & Furious 9, but Larson is carrying on that tradition after she revealed to Total Film that Tess is the daughter of none other than Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody.
“Tess is Mr. Nobody’s daughter. She is technically Agency, but she’s kind of a bridge, in a way. She doesn’t go along with the way that the Agency’s headed now that her father isn’t there. She believes in the legacy that her father set up, which is standing with Dom and standing with the Toretto family, and is fighting for that. Dom knows that she has a strong mind and definitely respects that she’s gone out of her way to talk to him and wants to build trust. What he asks of Tess is a test. Like, if it’s an impossible task, and she can get it done, then that’s family for life.”
That’s a pretty big spoiler to give away two months ahead of release, but it’s not as if anyone goes to see The Fast Saga for its intricate plotting and rug-pulling revelations. Instead, it’s become one of the most successful properties in history by blowing sh*t up to an unprecedented degree, something that’s destined to continue in May when Dominic Toretto and the gang gear up for their penultimate ride.
