Tapping into the breakout success of the 2014 sleeper hit, the studio has brought together director Mike Flanagan and screenwriter Jeff Howard (Oculus and Before I Wake) to hash out a script for Origin of Evil, which tees up a scenario in which a widowed mother and her two daughters toss caution and common sense to the wind by inviting malevolent spirits into their home. It’s all part of a devious scam that unsurprisingly takes a turn for the worst before long, leading to the youngest daughter falling prey to demonic possession.

Set against the Los Angeles of 1965, Ouija: Origin of Evil may not boast the clout of, say, fellow Blumhouse series Insidious, but there’s certainly a niche out there that Universal will hope to appease in two months’ time. On board for another round of supernatural thrills and spills are Elizabeth Reaser, Annalise Basso, Henry Thomas, Lulu Wilson, Lin Shaye and Doug Jones.

Ouija: Origin of Evil scurries into theaters on October 21, lending you plenty of time to squeeze in Universal’s cult horror sequel before All Hallow’s Eve.

In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
