December is so often a busy month for the movie industry, and 2016 is no exception. On the one hand, theatres across the globe are currently playing host to a great variety of films competing for awards season – the likes of Arrival, Fences and La La Land have emerged as the early favorites – while major studios have begun stoking excitement for some of 2017’s biggest blockbusters. In the past week alone, we’ve been treated to not one, but two teaser trailers: The Mummy, and the fist-pumping new promo for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Now, it’s time to welcome Transformers: The Last Knight into the spotlight. Building on the momentum from yesterday’s sneak peek, the trailer above is an explosive, tantalizing promo for what is surely one of 2017’s most-anticipated new releases. It’s crammed full of jaw-dropping action, as one would expect from a Michael Bay tentpole, but here we also get a glimpse of the story that awaits Optimus Prime and his allies, human and Autobot alike.
Much like previous installments in the series, The Last Knight dabbles with a little revisionist history – think of the Hoover Dam in the first movie – this time including a powerful artefact from medieval times, which goes some way to explaining Liam Garrigan’s casting as King Arthur. Though it runs the risk of becoming a simple MacGuffin, that artefact seemingly holds the power to restore Cybertron to its former glory, fuelling Optimus’ drive to bring peace to his distant home planet.
What’s more, as the first entry into the franchise to benefit from Paramount’s writers room, there’s a hushed excitement swirling around Michael Bay’s fifth (and final?) Transformers movie, but can it reach the dizzying box office heights of its predecessors?
Transformers: The Last Knight deploys on June 23, 2017 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Isabela Moner, Stanley Tucci, John Goodman, John Turturro, and Josh Duhamel.
