This week, Fox Searchlight releases Calvary, the second directorial effort from The Guard helmer John Michael McDonagh, and We Got This Covered is happy to be able to exclusively unveil new images from the darkly funny murder mystery.
Highlighted in the shots are star Brendan Gleeson and a host of talented supporting actors including Chris O’Dowd and Kelly Reilly. In Calvary, Gleeson plays Father James, a good-natured priest who is one day threatened during confession and finds his eyes opening to forces of darkness all around him. It’s an intriguing premise that seems ripe for McDonagh’s distinctive touch.
McDonagh’s first film was a terrific watch, equal parts witty and thrilling, and that it also starred Gleeson gives me reason to be excited for Calvary. The director has a knack for bringing authentic Irish flavor to his work, and it seems obvious that there’s no better star than Gleeson to help him do that. Admittedly, Calvary looks like a bit of a tougher sell than The Guard, dwelling in darker and more dramatic territory, but the talent involved suggests that it will be worth watching.
Check out the exclusive images below, and let us know whether Calvary is on your list of films to see.
Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kelly Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral – and often comic – problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.
