Ever since Disney and Lucasfilm first made it clear that the new Star Wars trilogy would be accompanied by a series of spinoffs, fans have been demanding that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi receive one of them. A fan-favourite character who many hold near and dear, there’s lots of moments in his history which could be explored, something that recent developments with Darth Maul in Star Wars Rebels have made clear.
McGregor has been fielding questions about a possible return for years now, and it appears as if he’s getting a little fed up of it. During a recent interview, the actor once again made it clear that he’s interested in returning to the Star Wars universe, but isn’t campaigning for the role despite it sometimes looking that way.
“Listen, I have been asked about it a lot, to the point where it looks a bit like I’m sort of touting for work. I’ve been very open to say I’d be happy to do it, if they want to do it.”
It’s easy enough to see where he’s coming from, but it’s a shame nothing seems to be developing here. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first of these Anthology movies, while Han Solo is up next in 2018. What will follow that hasn’t been revealed, though it’s possible we’ll learn more come Star Wars Celebration next month.
For now, Obi-Wan’s future on the big screen is unclear, something made worse by recent comments that future Star Wars spinoffs will move away from legacy characters in the future. McGregor has a long time to go before he looks as old as Alec McGuinness though, so there’s still plenty of time for this particular Star Wars movie to happen somewhere down the line, right?
