While we impatiently wait for Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez to get the ball rolling apropos of an Evil Dead sequel, owner of the intellectual property, Lionsgate, has announced that the original fright fest, directed by Sam Raimi, will be getting the 4K Ultra HD treatment and it’ll be arriving just in time for your yearly viewing on Halloween.
According to Bloody Disgusting, The Evil Dead will be debuting on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray and Digital on October 9th. Although, the only extra feature is said to be an audio commentary with writer-director Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and star Bruce Campbell. Still, reliving every second of the cult icon hacking and slashing his way through a legion from hell in full HD should be incentive enough to splurge on the re-release.
Unfortunately, it’s been a challenging year or so for the league of Evil Dead enthusiasts otherwise. A few months back, it was revealed that Ash vs. Evil Dead wouldn’t be returning for a fourth season, which ultimately resulted in Campbell’s retirement from the titular role. Understandably, this was a devastating blow for the horror fandom, and as a result, they haven’t had much to look forward to in the way of future content.
Thankfully, the aforementioned producer of The Evil Dead series, Robert Tapert, provided a reason for optimism during an appearance at Motor City Comic Con earlier this year. The franchise veteran disclosed that he and Raimi are frequently in contact and hope to reboot the entire series with a new movie soon.
Given that Fede Alvarez has now moved on in the form of The Girl in the Spider’s Web, it’s highly unlikely he’ll be the man for the job. Granted, he’s been rather vocal in his quest for a sequel to his 2013 reimagining, but taking what Tapert said into account, it does look like he and Raimi are eager to take The Evil Dead in a new direction.
