Though a lot of Marvel-centric news swirling around the internet over the past month has been focused primarily on Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, superhero sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier is actually the next film coming out of the mega-successful film studio. Scheduled for next April, the sequel is set to send the Cap (Chris Evans) on a modern-day adventure around Washington, D.C..
Though a few story reveals (mostly centered around the titular antagonist) have cropped up in recent months, there’s still a lot that we don’t know about the plot of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and a new crop of images from Empire, which you can check out at the bottom of this article, isn’t doing much to change that. The shots, which find the film’s main players preparing for battle, look pretty cool without telling us much of anything we didn’t already know about the film.
As directed by Joe and Anthony Russo of Community fame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been described as a “political thriller” by those involved with the film. It’s set two years after the events of The Avengers and will introduce classic comic-book characters like the villainous Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and heroic Falcon (Anthony Mackie), not to mention the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), one of the Cap’s WWII-era buddies who was captured and brainwashed by the evil HYDRA organization. Additionally, the new images serve as a reminder that Robert Redford will play a major role in the film.
The vague plot synopsis for Captain America: The Winter Soldier reads as follows:
After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.
