THR is reporting that as expected, Emma Stone‘s character in The Amazing Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy, will be killed off at some point in the trilogy.
They mention that Shailene Woodley, who is now confirmed to be playing Mary Jane Watson, will only have a small part in the sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Her role will then become more prominent in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 as the film takes on the “Death of Gwen Stacy” storyline.
If you’re unfamliar with how Gwen dies in the comics, I suggest you check out The Amazing Spider-Man #121. In the comic, the Green Goblin holds Gwen captive in a tower on the George Washington Bridge. During a fight with Spider-Man, Green Goblin throws Gwen off the bridge but Spidey catches her with a web.
Thinking he’s saved her he pulls her back onto the bridge only to find out that she’s actually dead. Not sure if she died before the fall or if his web, which broke the fall, snapped her neck, Peter is racked with guilt and it is Mary Jane who helps him heal and recover.
Anyone who is familiar with the comics knows that Gwen Stacy dies, so hearing that Emma Stone will be killed off isn’t too much of a shocker. It does beg the question though, how much else from the comics are they going to take? Does this mean we’ll be seeing Green Goblin make an appearance sometime soon?
