Though I’ve never hated any of the Terminator films as a whole, I’ll readily concede that no sequel has managed to measure up to the first two offerings. Hey, those babies are classics in the science fiction and action genres, and set the bar rather high.
That being said, the next entry into the franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate, sure does have a lot to live up to. To its credit, James Cameron is back on board in a sense, and Linda Hamilton is returning as Sarah Connor. Arnold Schwarzenegger is there to top the bill, of course, but having another member of the old guard around could very well entice jaded fans to give this one a chance.
Believe it or not, another bombshell was just dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, and that pertains to Edward Furlong reprising the John Connor role. That’s right, he’s back after a lengthy absence from the franchise, thus making this truly feel like a sequel to Judgment Day, which it absolutely is.
In the time since Judgment Day‘s release, the character of John Connor has been played by a different actor in each subsequent appearance. At this rate, he’s becoming the Terminator series’ answer to Felix Leiter.
To briefly recap, Nick Stahl, Christian Bale and Jason Clarke each had their own crack at the bat in Rise of the Machines, Salvation and Genisys, respectively. No disrespect to any of them, but when I think of John Connor, Furlong is the first that springs to mind because, well, he came before any of those fellas. I’m sure a good percentage of those reading this will agree.
Terminator: Dark Fate opens in theaters on November 1st.
