Pennywise the Dancing Clown (AKA The Eater of Worlds) is not your typical movie monster.
Unlike, say, Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, Stephen King’s shapeshifting abomination is able to manifest itself in a variety of different forms based on its target of choice. With an insatiable appetite for children (frightened flesh tastes better, apparently), Pennywise often masquerades as a wisecracking circus clown to lure in his prey, while King’s demon also has an unnatural ability to morph into a person’s greatest fears and nightmares, which only has us all the more intrigued for New Line and Andy Muschietti’s It.
Adding onto that excitement now is the first batch of reviews for the film. Actually, they’re more just reactions, as full reviews are still under embargo, but it would seem that the upcoming Stephen King adaptation is going over extremely well with critics. As evidenced by the series of Tweets below, It looks set to be a truly horrifying and scary ride, one that’s earning unanimous praise for its cast, humor, heart and more.
I can say I saw #IT tonight. And IT was great. Cast is excellent. And, yes, 🤡is scary! This will be a, ahem, monster at the box office.

Of course, it’s always best to approach this kind of stuff with caution, as we’ve seen many instances in the past where early reactions from critics haven’t been indicative of what the general public ends up thinking of a film. Even with that in mind though, it’s hard not to be excited after reading all of this and it only adds onto the positive buzz that’s been building for months now.
It Part 1 – The Losers Club creeps into theaters on September 8th, and it’s eyeing a historic opening at the domestic box office. Will New Line’s adaptation tap out at $60 million, though? Or do you expect the film to climb higher still? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place and be sure to check out 3 new clips – plus some behind the scenes footage – down below.
