Even though a solid handful of the basic plot points for The Dark Knight Rises have been offered up to the masses, and the key characters revealed (either through footage or casting news) when you think about it, we really don’t know exactly what events are going to populate an epic that runs at 2 hours and 45 minutes.

One of the most persistent rumours still swirling amongst eager fans is that Marion Cotillard’s Wayne Industries employee Miranda Tate is indeed Talia al Ghul in guise. Well, ComicBookMovie was recently able to browse through literary tie-in The Dark Knight Rises: The Secret Files Scrapbook and Tate’s identity (among other things) may be true after all.

With Christopher Nolan’s trilogy coming full circle, it was always safe to assume the League of Shadows would make an appearance. According to the book, terrorist Bane is actually exiled from the League Of Shadows for his “extreme behaviour,” and that “he appears to be building an army of followers in the dark tunnels underneath Gotham in order to create his own League.”

So, with Cotillard recently being vocal that her character was a “good guy” perhaps she and her organization have returned to Gotham to stop Bane, rather than support him. Whenever the League of Shadows is mentioned, it always seems synonymous with overt villainy. But if you carefully recall the events of Batman Begins Ra’s ah Ghul and co. simply carry with them deeply rooted ideals about justice and wanted to purge Gotham of its evil, not to rain chaos for the hell of it – they do have principles and honor.

The timely arrival of Catwoman could also be tied to the League as if she is too a member, she may be aligning herself with Batman in a less low-key (more ass-kicking) way than Talia. The recent MTV footage made it clear that Catwoman is indeed familiar with Bane, stating “you should be as afraid of him as I am” indicating either a past professional (or personal) link.

Though this may seem like big news in comparison to the shrouded and mysterious bits of plot we’ve gotten so far, I’m confident we can trust than Nolan and Warner Bros. still has a lot of epic developments with which to blindside us.

The Dark Knight Rises swoops into theaters July 20.
