Power Rangers isn’t the only ’90s phenomenon poised to make a comeback in 2017 – Paramount has spent the past two years piecing together a feature-length version of Baywatch and now, six months out from release, we have our first fleeting glimpse of Seth Gordon’s reboot in motion. Notorious B.I.G, playing over The Rock in slow-motion? Consider us sold.
Taking the bare bones of NBC’s original sitcom series – impossibly attractive lifeguards hit the beach in slow-motion, sometimes saving lives while doing so – Paramount’s Baywatch movie drops the campy nature of its forebear in favor of a more modern, Jump Street-esque zing that can be traced down to the chemistry between its leading stars. Headed up by Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s duelling lifeguards – one’s a seasoned veteran, the other a hotshot maverick – today’s first-look teaser sees the former emerging from the ocean, with what looks to be a hapless Ronnie (Jon Bass) in his arms.
Also on board for the R-rated romp are Cathal Pendred, Johnson’s San Andreas co-star Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jon Bass, Priyanka Chopra and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. There’s room in the Baywatch ranks for the old guard, too, given that both David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson are set to cameo.
