Forget Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home – the real hit trailer of the month has finally landed! I’m talking, of course, about Downton Abbey. Though the film will most likely lack intergalactic space battles and insane superpowered action sequences, it will feature uncomfortable dinner parties and Imelda Staunton raising her eyebrow ever-so-slightly.
Seriously though, this movie is probably going to do some big business. The television show of the same name that ran from 2010-2015 was a gargantuan worldwide smash and ended its story in 1925, with the aristocratic family struggling to preserve their estate. Presumably, the film will pick up soon after and though plot details remain thin, we know that Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael and Maggie Smith (among others) are all confirmed to be returning. Not only that, but they’ll be joined by a stellar supporting cast that includes Imelda Staunton, Geraldine James, Tuppence Middleton, Simon Jones, David Haig, Kate Phillips and Stephen Campbell Moore.
Unfortunately, this first teaser trailer doesn’t give much away when it comes to what we can expect, instead showing off the opulent surroundings and ephemera that have made the show so iconic, but set pictures have hinted that we’ll see the household cavalry in procession and there’s a chance of a Royal Visit at some point in the film as well. If that’s the case, then it seems to be coming worryingly close to stepping on the toes of Netflix’s The Crown, but given that there seems to be an inexhaustible appetite for British poshos sneering at each other on screen, I don’t think they have much to worry about.
Downton Abbey is scheduled for a UK release on September 13th, 2019, with the US following one week later on September 20th, 2019.
