Our first sneak peek at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 really didn’t reveal too much, and while a full length trailer is right around the corner, don’t expect that to shed too much light on the plot, either. During a recent interview to promote the release of the first trailer for The Belko Experiment, director James Gunn explained why he plans on keeping his cards close to his chest.
“With Guardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie’s about. And there’s a lot of mysteries in Guardians 2.”
That’s the case for pretty much every Marvel Studios movie, but with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set to delve into the identity of Star-Lord’s father and possibly even help kick off the events of Avengers: Infinity War (even if Thanos doesn’t appear), it’s understandable that Gunn is hoping he can keep all of its secrets safe until next May.
Asked to elaborate on how he intends to make sure the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailers don’t give too much away, the filmmaker added:
“We were talking about how much to give away — and we’re not going to give away very much. With Guardians, it’s such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It’s like, ‘God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? Those are always hard choices to make.”
While Marvel Studios did go through a spell of spoiling pretty much every major moment from their movies in trailers and TV spots, that’s changed in recent years, with even most of Spider-Man’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War kept under wraps much to the surprise of fans who thought he’d be front and centre in the marketing campaign.
Between that and Gunn’s comments, it’s now looking highly likely that we can expect to continue guessing about what’s to come in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for the foreseeable future – and honestly, we’re quite alright with that.
