For many, Christian Bale defined Batman for a generation, playing the iconic character in three films directed by Christopher Nolan culminating with The Dark Knight Rises. In the time since, the Caped Crusader has been recast, but the impression left by Bale is undeniable. As such, countless fans have kept their fingers crossed in hope that he’ll one day return to the superhero genre.
Knowing this, Collider recently put forth the question as to whether the highly sought after actor would ever be interested in playing another character in a superhero film, more specifically for Marvel. Here’s what he had to say while doing his press rounds for The Promise:
“No, I’m not interested in doing that. I’ve never seen — I’m trying to think if that’s correct, I think I’m actually correct, I can’t remember a single superhero film that I’ve ever watched. Apart from the ones I made and like, the Christopher Reeve Superman films… I love those. Other than that, no I’ve never seen anything.”
While there’s not a lot of grey area there, it’s important to remember that a fellow former Batman in Michael Keaton is once again dipping his toe in the genre, this time as the villainous Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And although it’s entirely possible that Bale will keep to his word, you simply don’t know what’ll happen ten or twenty years down the line, so never say never.
As for not having seen any other superhero movies, well, I do remember Bale having said he’s seen the Burton-Schumacher quadrilogy when doing press for Batman Begins, most likely for research. Perhaps he viewed them only one time and has since put them out of his mind? Either way, if these kind of movies aren’t necessarily his cup of tea, you can’t argue with him.
