With the cast of Iron Man 3 out and about doing press for the film, the question of whether or not there will be an Iron Man 4 has come up quite a bit. And while nothing has been confirmed by the studio, Don Cheadle seems to think that there’s a possibility that it could happen.

We sat down with the actor today at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, where he stopped by for an interview.  Among the many things we discussed was the possibility of an Iron Man 4. After hearing Gwyneth Paltrow state that she didn’t think there would another film in the series, I asked Cheadle whether or not he’s heard anything about a fourth outing for everyone’s favorite Avenger.

Check out what he had to say below:

“I’ve been hearing everything. [laughs] I’m hearing people telling me that there will be, I’m hearing Robert saying he won’t come back, then he’s saying he will come back. I just don’t think anyone knows. A lot of it is predicated on how this one performs and how well it’s received. Right now it’s tracking insanely well but really it’s about being able to find a new way in. Being able to come up with something that just doesn’t look like “another trip to the ATM.” There’s no reason to go back if that’s what it is.

We have to find a way to come up with a fresh approach to these films. Keeping in mind what Marvel’s doing with their other films, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, which will probably eventually have another spin, it’s just figuring out ways to tell the story that’s fresh and innovating and interesting. If they can do all that, then who are we kidding, of course they’re going to make another film.”

The actor also discussed whether or not he would portray War Machine in a spinoff film should the opportunity ever arise, a topic that has come up quite a bit over the past few weeks.

Here’s what he had to say:

Ya, of course. But again, it would have to be something that would be warranted, it would need to be needed. If it just feels like something that’s trying to capitalize on the heat then that’s just a prescription for failure. There needs to be a storyline that hasn’t already been mined. I’d like to see Rhodes untethered. I wonder what he’d be like out of uniform. What if his moral compass leads him to answering the call to something that wasn’t politically correct or politically sanctioned but he does it anyway? I don’t know, I’ve got fantasies about where it can go. They’ll figure it out or they won’t figure it out. But it’d be great to come back and play this character again if it makes sense.

Check back later this week as we’ll have the full interview for you. In the meantime, let us know what you think of an Iron Man 4, is it something that you’d like to see? Or should they keep it at three?
