Sure, it may not be as good as the real thing, but at long last, we finally have our very first look at Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Premiering tonight during the Super Bowl, as promised, this new promo offers only a brief glimpse at the upcoming spinoff, but given that it’s less than 4 months away and we’ve seen absolutely next to nothing from it up to this point, we’ll take what we can get.
Again, this being really just a teaser for the trailer, it’s hard to learn much from the footage on display. We do get at least some idea of the tone they’re going for here though – which seems to be a far cry from the comedic angle previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller wanted – in addition to what looks to be a gritty vibe that’s not too different than what we saw in Rogue One.
Of course, there’s also a few shots of each of the main characters but perhaps most surprising of all, we barely even get to see the titular hero himself, with Han only appearing very briefly near the end. Then again, given that this is just the appetizer, we’re fairly certain that tomorrow’s main course will allow us to see Alden Ehrenreich in action.
Story-wise, we know Solo: A Star Wars Story orbits around a series of daring escapades “deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld. There, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.”
On paper, it certainly has all the makings of a rip-roaring adventure, but will Ron Howard and co. be able to pull through and deliver another thrilling Anthology movie? One that will satisfy viewers in the same way that Rogue One did? Well, that remains to be seen.
Either way, though, it’ll all kick off on May 25th. There’s a new Star Wars movie on the horizon, folks, which ought to give Rian Johnson some well-deserved respite after answering nine kinds of questions and curious queries about The Last Jedi. At least, we’d like to think so…
