Disney Reveals The Name Of Jude Law’s Captain Marvel Character

Though it was a long-standing assumption in certain corners of the MCU fanbase that Jude Law was set to play Mar-Vell in next year’s Captain Marvel, Disney’s refusal to confirm either way has led to plenty of uncertainty and speculation, and thanks to a Funko! Pop leak from a few weeks ago, the alternative theory that the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star was instead playing Yon-Rogg has built up some serious traction.

But to complicate matters further, Disney’s official movie site has offered another development that should send a fair few fans back to the drawing board. Specifically, the site features a gallery of images from Carol Danvers’ solo debut, and among the pics is one of Law that’s captioned, “Jude Law as Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce.”

So, can we take this as confirmation that Law is, in fact, not playing Yon-Rogg? Well, it certainly calls that rumor into question, but the internet has already started suggesting ways of reconciling the contradictory info we’re getting right now. MCU Cosmic, for instance, has speculated that Law could be adopting two personas in the movies – the “good” Marv-Vell and the “bad” Yon-Rogg – and given Marvel Studios’ silence on the matter, you have to wonder if the film has a major twist of this nature lined up.

Regardless of who Law’s playing, the film should have no shortage of villains, with Carol set to go up against the shape-shifting Skrulls led by Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. What’s more, as a member of the Starforce team, our hero will be fighting alongside some pretty mean figures, including Korath the Pursuer of Guardians of the Galaxy fame. We’ll find out what further foes hide in her midst when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
