Though fans had been holding out hope for another TRON movie following TRON: Legacy for a while, we all eventually gave up on it after Disney pulled the plug on TRON 3, which was going to be subtitled Ascension and see the return of director Joseph Kosinski alongside stars Garrett Hedlung and Olivia Wilde.
Since the film was cancelled, talk of a sequel has mostly died down. Until now, that is. Speaking with Screen Rant in a recent interview, producer Brigham Taylor re-ignited hopes for a third entry into the series, saying the following:
I always hope for that. I just had a wonderful visit to Shanghai, where they have an amazing attraction based on Tron Legacy. The designers just did such an amazing job creating the feeling of stepping onto The Grid, and that indelible visual world that Lisberger created and Kosinski explored… and I think there’s a real stickiness to that that I hope can grow into a film or whatever else. So I don’t know what I’d ‘hint’ at other than that I hope for that, and that there’s obviously been conversations.
There are definitely hints of optimism there, and it’s good to know that conversations are still taking place. Unfortunately though, it’s going to be a very long time before we end up seeing a third TRON film, if we even see one at all.
Disney doesn’t seem to be too concerned with making it, and given that TRON: Legacy didn’t exactly light the box office on fire (even though it cost a fortune to make), it’s easy to see why the House of Mouse is hesitant to jump back into this world. At least, right now.
