Disney’s about to shuffle onto Netflix’s turf with the arrival of Disney Plus, an upcoming streaming service for the House Of Mouse to debut original content from their various franchises. And at the top of the list is Marvel.
We know that Marvel Studios is set to serve up a bunch of big budget limited TV series to air exclusively on Disney Plus, with each one starring some fan favorite characters from the MCU. And according to President Kevin Feige, the platform will be of huge importance to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it’ll really allow for the franchise to expand beyond the confines of the silver screen.
Obviously, the MCU has had spinoff shows before now, but these were the efforts of Marvel Television and disconnected from the movies. That won’t be the case with these series though, as Feige himself will oversee them.
“Disney+ is, yes… Which is another exciting avenue and another exciting thing about being at this place at this time and goes back to the amount of characters we have and the amount of stories we could tell,” said Feige.
Without discussing exactly what’ll release on Disney Plus, the producer explained that – while there’s no way they can make more than three movies a year – the streaming site gives them another platform and medium to work in in order to continue to ensure that the MCU’s as wide-ranging and prolific as possible.
“When we announced ten movies and people asked “Well what about these other things?’ the previous stance would be ‘We only have a certain number of slots to make movies per year.’ That’s still true but we have another outlet that I think will be very unique and very special.”
As you’ve surely heard, there are two Marvel shows officially confirmed to arrive on Disney Plus, probably as early as 2019. These are a solo vehicle for everyone’s favorite Asgardian antihero Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston, and Vision and the Scarlet Witch, with Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen set to reprise their roles.
Others that’ve been rumored include a Rocket and Groot show, a buddy cop-type vehicle for Winter Soldier and Falcon and possibly even a Nick Fury spinoff. All of these sound awesome and they’re just the tip of the iceberg as well. Clearly, Feige’s right with his comments here and the Disney Plus streaming service will no doubt prove to be an exciting gift to MCU fans.
