In the aftermath of an industry-wide shakeup occurring at Disney today, horror fanatics and Xenomorph die-hards are in great luck — as the Fede Alvarez-led Alien standalone spectacular has finally received an official release date. While Marvel projects and James Cameron’s Avatar sequels are being pushed back, Disney has placed its eggs in the horror basket with its first-ever Alien installment.
As per The Wrap, the Don’t Breathe director’s Alien venture is slated for release on Aug. 16, 2024. However, it’s worth noting that the much-anticipated installment has yet to receive an official title, although it’s already been confirmed that Alvarez is collaborating with the OG Alien director Ridley Scott – who will serve as a producer. And if Scott’s tremendous work on the 1979 horror is anything to go on, then it’s clear that the duo are sizing up something special for Disney horror lovers.
As previously mentioned, Alvarez’s flick is set to be “an original standalone feature,” and will focus on a group of young people who unfortunately come face-to-face with a terrifying creature beyond their wildest imaginations. And while we’re still over a year away from the project being brought to life on the big screen, there’s simply no denying that Alvarez is gunning to create movie magic as he has so effortlessly in the past.
In a perfect world, Sigourney Weaver would have some sort of involvement in the project, but much like Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, Weaver would much rather let the Ellen Ripley character be and allow younger actors and actresses to take on roles in the franchise. Either way, we’ll certainly be seated when Alvarez’s Alien picture releases next August.
