The Disney movie Strange World sparked a lot of news when it came out in November, but for all the wrong reasons. The movie bombed pretty hard and it surprised everyone with how badly it did. But how bad was it? We’ll be able to find out soon because the movie is coming to Disney Plus.
Of all the Disney movies that came before it, Strange World made the least money. Less than Atlantis: The Lost Empire and the trash heap that is Treasure Planet. The numbers are brutal. The movie’s budget was reportedly around $180 million – making it the tenth most expensive animated movie ever.
It made around $18.6 million. That’s bad. Really bad. Considering there’s a good chance you haven’t seen it, here’s a quick synopsis:
The movie centers around a family of explorers named the Clades. They travel to a “treacherous land” with some fun side characters including a blob and a dog, and… get into adventures? No one seems to know.
It also featured the voice acting talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union and Lucy Liu.
So why did it bomb? It’s hard to say but it seems like a perfect storm of costing too much, a marketing campaign that basically had no idea what it wanted to be, lack of movie theater attendance and even the World Cup all played a role.
Disney also can’t blame critics, because the movie sits at a comfortable 73% on the Tomatometer. So is it bad? You can decide for yourself when it lands on Disney Plus on December 23.
