From Jeff Bridges to Cate Blanchett, to Natalie Portman and Robert Redford, while the Marvel movies haven’t exactly been Oscar magnets, the MCU sure has a long history of calling on the talents of Academy Award-winning actors to partake in this ongoing superhero saga. And while the DCEU can’t boast quite the star power of its biggest rival, any franchise that can nab big names like Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and Ben Affleck has to be doing something right.
As the list of esteemed film stars who’ve yet to leave their stamp on either universe gets shorter by the year, it was only a matter of time before Denzel Washington entered the conversation, with the renowned performer continuing to garner award attention with recent dramas like Fences and Roman J. Israel, Esq. He even has his own smaller-scaled series going with the Equalizer movies, and it was during a promotional video for The Equalizer 2 when Washington was asked whether he’d ever been approached to work on a Marvel or DC flick.
Speaking to JOE.ie, his answer was a quick negative, but left open the possibility of his involvement somewhere down the line.
“I haven’t been approached… we’ll see what happens. Never say never.”
While this might not be the most enthusiastic of responses, the actor also made it very clear in a discussion with JOE.co.uk that he’s a passionate supporter of one Marvel movie in particular.
“Black Panther, I shed a tear. I was sitting in there — I ran into Chad [Boseman] and Ryan [Coogler] before the movie started, it was their premiere or the screening in New York, and just talking to them and they went into the movie — and the 40 years I’ve been in this game came back to me.”
Well, the word’s out there now, but only time will tell whether either studio’s paying attention. Until we hear something more, though, tell us, who do you think Denzel Washington could play in the MCU or DCEU? Make yourself heard by dropping a comment down below.
