Imagine waiting six years for a new Deadpool movie and seven for the return of Wolverine but when it finally happens, it’s served with the worst possible twist. That’s what some fans are hoping will happen when Deadpool 3 rolls around next year.
According to a recent Reddit post, a possible theory for Hugh Jackman’s big introduction into the MCU is that he will be playing himself, the actor who plays Wolverine, instead of the clawed mutant. In this version of the film, Deadpool kidnaps the Australian actor because he’s convinced he’s his best friend Logan, and Jackman somehow feels forced to play along.
The comments are surprisingly backing the fantasy, with some scripting entire scenes of the imaginary film where Hugh Jackman’s claws are just part of his Australian upbringing.
Another scenario sees Jackman’s meta cameo as a funny quip before getting to the real deal. A similar setup has already been done in the post-credits scenes of Deadpool 2 where the merc with a mouth shoots the actor who plays him in real life in order to stop him from taking on the fantastically terrible 2011 film Green Lantern.
Now, that version could actually be part of Ryan Reynolds’ new outing as the beloved prankster. Back in 2018, the Deadpool actor said he wanted his buddy in a future film, not as Wolverine, but as someone even more powerful — the award-winning performer Hugh Jackman. That would explain all the nods to the actor in previous films like Wade wearing a paper mask of his face.
Regardless of what leaked set pictures might indicate, Jackman did say he’ll be playing “a dual role” (two different characters?) in the film, making the above theory entirely too possible.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled for a May 3, 2024 release.
