“You ever hear David Beckham speak? It’s like he mouth-sexed a can of helium!”
Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick clearly operated under the philosophy of ‘anything goes’ when crafting the script for Deadpool, but it seems one joke, in particular, has come back to bite Wade Wilson in the ass.
That zinger, as today’s bizarre new video confirms, was the one pointed in the direction of David Beckham, former professional footballer for both Manchester United and England, before his wildly successful career took him to Real Madrid and, ultimately, LA Galaxy. And so, after two full years, Becks has opened his door to the Merc With a Mouth – reluctantly, we might add – to forgive and forget.
Yes, it can only be the latest promo video for Deadpool 2, which begins with Wade Wilson begging for an apology, only for Beckham to flip the tables and berate a fully-costumed Ryan Reynolds for his cinematic duds and, as Becks so rightly points out, there’s a list: Green Lantern, R.I.P.D., Blade Trinity, Boltneck…
This is just the latest Deadpool 2 marketing stunt to emerge from 20th Century Fox, as over the past fortnight viewers have been treated to Wade’s duet with Celene Dion (!) and a no spoiler plea that is decidedly Deadpool.
As you’ll no doubt recall, last month directors Joe and Anthony Russo took to Twitter in anticipation of Avengers: Infinity War, and asked fans that they think twice before ruining a Marvel movie 10 years in the making – just as they wouldn’t want it spoiled for them. And, well, let’s just say Wade Wilson has a way with words, as his frankly hilarious open letter ends by warning viewers that they “don’t say a fucking word.”
Never change, Deadpool. Never change…
