With Bohemian Rhapsody finding itself up for many of the top prizes at this weekend’s Academy Awards, it seems like the music biopic’s all set to make a big comeback, gearing up Rocketman to be one of the more anticipated releases of the year.
And though Bohemian was criticized for taking liberties with its source material, the promotion for the Elton John film is heavily leaning into its differences from reality. Said to be a “fantasy musical,” Rocketman‘s looking to put its own spin on John’s unique story and to prove that, we now have a brand new trailer for your viewing pleasure.
While some of it does appear to be just a rehash of what we’ve already seen in countless rock-n-roll biopics already, the more fantastical parts of the preview do promise that Rocketman will be a breath of fresh air in the genre and there’s no doubt a lot of creativity on display here. Not to mention that Egerton looks great as the iconic singer, too, and may just find himself with some awards recognition.
Promising an “uncensored” look into the life and legacy of Elton John, you can expect to be taken on a journey through time with Rocketman, which will apparently conclude with the historic release of the titular song, by which point John had cemented his status as one of the industry’s creative powerhouses and also as one of the most admired and respected artists on the planet.
In a genre known for sticking to a fixed formula that rarely changes things up, Rocketman is starting to look more and more like a refreshing change of pace from what we’re used to and we can’t wait for it open in theaters later this year on May 31st.
