Still fresh off the high that comes with debuting a film at Cannes, Cosmopolis compadres David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson are already eyeing their next collaboration: Maps to the Stars, with the Canadian director also looking to have frequent muse Viggo Mortenson join.

Cosmopolis received mixed reviews from critics at the prestigious film festival, but that’s pretty much par for the course for the eccentric director’s less mainstream efforts. One thing that does seem to be rather unanimous is that the drama is essentially a showcase for Pattinson, who successfully sheds his “Twilight” brand in the film.

Viggo Mortenson, on the other hand, has worked with Cronenberg on three straight films (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method), with Eastern Promises earning the thesp a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Though neither actor is officially signed on, Mortenson and Pattinson are both very interested.

So what is this mysterious project you may ask? Maps to the Stars is described as a very extreme film “about two child actors ruined by Hollywood’s depravity” and will be scribed by screenwriter Bruce Wagner (A Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors).

Before you get excited about the next Cronenberg mind trip, the director tried to get financing pushed through five years ago to no avail.

“It’s not a go picture. We have a script that I love that Bruce wrote. It’s a very difficult film to get made as was ‘Cosmopolis’ actually. Whether I can get this movie to happen, I tried it five years ago, I couldn’t get it made, so I still might not be able to get it made,” said Cronenberg.

So there you have it. We’ll keep you updated as things develop with Maps to the Stars – an interesting sounding film from a great auteur that I hope sees the light of day.
