In the final push before Exodus: Gods And Kings hits theatres next month, Fox have rolled out the UK trailer for Ridley Scott’s biblical epic. Striking out in a different manner to previous teasers, this last attempt to rally cinemagoers hones in on the grandiose scale of Scott’s swords and sandals epic.
Considering that the parable of Moses is a tale as old as time, the angle for the imminent blockbuster appears to be a refreshing update. At the same time, it still maintains the central dramatic tension between Moses (Christian Bale) and Pharoah Ramses (Joel Edgerton), as the former frees 400,000 held captive by the latter. With the shackles behind them, the mass of former slaves trek across an inhospitable Egypt rife with plagues and probably wind up with a lot of sand in their eyes.
Such an ambitious story is made all the more achievable by a heavy dose of CGI, which is showcased in the latest preview. Forgoing the establishing relationship between the two nemeses, we’re instead invited to bow in awe of the sheer spectacle. Seas swell, hordes cavort in the waves, and there’s plenty of bellowing soliloquies. The brief glimpses at this majestic biblical drama are a very tantalizing taster of what’s to come.
