The National Board of Review has just unveiled their picks for best film achievements of 2012 and Zero Dark Thirty strikes again with another Best Picture win merely two days after it won the same honor from The New York Film Critics Circle. Kathryn Bigelow also takes her second victory as Best Director. Jessica Chastain, who has been receiving quite a lot of buzz for her performance in the film, has scored her first Best Actress win.
Silver Linings Playbook also received some attention, taking Best Actor for Bradley Cooper’s excellent performance, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for David O. Russell. The film also was named as one of the Top Films of the Year.
A few unexpected wins came in the Best Supporting Actor category, where Leonardo DiCaprio won for his performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, and in the Best Original Screenplay category, where Rian Johnson won for his screenplay to his sci-fi action flick Looper.
Les Miserables and Argo finally get a little awards attention after being shut out from the NYCFF’s honors by taking Best Ensemble and a Special Achievement in Filmmaking, respectively, as well as earning mentions on the Top Films of the Year list.
With two wins under its belt already, is Zero Dark Thirty the film that will be ruling over awards season? It’s a little too early to tell at this point, but it’s starting to look like a critics favorite. It should also be noted that the NBR’s pick for Best Picture has only matched the Academy’s selection twice in the last ten years (as opposed to the NYFCC, who’s selections matched four times), so don’t go betting on Zero Dark Thirty to take the big prize just yet.
Up next, The Los Angeles Film Critics Association names their picks in four days. Will the love for Zero Dark Thirty continue? Check back to find out!
