Daniel Brühl, who played a Nazi war hero turned actor in Inglourious Basterds, is in talks to star opposite of Chris Hemsworth in Ron Howard’s Rush. Brühl would play Niki Lauda, an Austrian championship racer.

Hemsworth is playing James Hunt, who was Lauda’s good friend and fierce rival. The film is being written by Peter Morgan, (Frost/NixonThe Queen) and it will take place in 1976, centering around a racing championship.

Brühl, like Christoph Waltz and Mélanie Laurent, was one of the foreign actors in Inglourious Basterds who truly shone in his role and made a name for himself in the United States. He has since done some work in Europe, and this could potentially be his next big American project.

In Inglourious Basterds, he had fantastic chemistry with Laurent, and was quite good at soliciting the audience’s sympathies despite what he had done for the Germans.

The directing and writing team of Ron Howard and Peter Morgan is obviously spectacular, and the possible combination of Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth sounds promising as well.

Ron Howard will be directing Rush in the current absence of production for The Dark Tower. Whether or not he will get a chance to make The Dark Tower after Rush is still up in the air. For now though, at least we have this project to look forward to and from everything we’ve been hearing, it looks like it has potential to be a winner.
