Dancing In The Moonlight: Matt Donato’s 25 Best Movies Of 2016

We are not here today to mourn the loss of art. We're here to celebrate all the tremendous accomplishments achieved this year that were captured through a camera's lens. Far more than twenty-five films knocked me on my ass this year, but who has time for a bigger lists these days? These are the creme dela creme - those movies that reduced me to tears, tore up my insides or made me cower in fear. There was a lot to feel this year, and it was a pleasure soaking each experience in.

Only Richard Linklater could tie college bro-downs to conversations about life’s meaning and Sisyphus.

In his spiritual follow-up to Dazed And Confused, Linklater explores the joys of manhood through party-first baseball jocks. Thumping tunes and an 80s aesthetic make for quite the lively friendship comedy driven by testosterone, while teammates compete in every conceivable arena possible. The trick is, this isn’t just another boys-chase-girls frat comedy – and that’s the beauty in Linklater’s vision.

The cast itself is what makes Everybody Wants Some!! so damn chummy. You’ve got Ryan Guzman as the charmer, Tyler Hoechlin as the aggressive alpha, Wyatt Russell as the stoner, Glen Powell as the motormouth philosopher, Austin Amelio as the nutjob wild card – I challenge that 2016 hasn’t seen a greater ensemble cast (even talking Moonlight and others). Mainly because Zoey Deutch is the firecracker crush of Blake Jenner who’s pithy enough to counteract their bulging machismo, introducing balance into their perfect sports world.

Plus, 80s mustaches. Lots.
