You just can’t keep those Ghostbusters down. Two years after the all-female reboot of the beloved 1980s franchise came and went, original star Dan Aykroyd is now promising that a true Ghostbusters 3, starring the three surviving OG ‘busters, is on its way. Many thought the death of Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler, in 2014 had put paid to a reunion, but Aykroyd’s comments suggest that we can look forward to him teaming up with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson in the near future.
While speaking on The Big Interview With Dan Rather, the man fans know as Ray Stantz agreed with Rather’s wording that he was talking about making a “full-blown third Ghostbusters,” with an unknown writer already currently working on the script. Obviously, Aykroyd wouldn’t let on to anything about story details, but he did tease that it’ll try and recapture what worked so well about the original films while giving it a “21st century” twist.
“I think we got a story that’s gonna work. It’s being written by a really good filmmaker, can’t say the names, but they’re a good team, they’re making an effort to bring back all the spirit and the emotion of the first two movies, and then take it into the 21st century with a vernacular that’s needed today to get it a crossed.”
Obviously, you could apply the same description to Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters movie, which updated the concept from the first film by recasting the team with the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. For whatever reason, though, the reboot didn’t land the way Sony were hoping and Aykroyd has seemingly confirmed that a sequel with that cast will not be happening, which is why he’s decided to steer the franchise back to how it used to be.
Honestly, we’ve heard talk of other Ghostbusters projects happening before that never went anywhere – like Channing Tatum’s spinoff film or that animated series titled Ecto Force – so we’ll properly put stock in this one once we’ve heard that it’s actually heading into production. Nevertheless, this is encouraging news for anyone with something strange in their neighborhood.
