Last week’s announcement of the 2015 Oscar nominees turned into a riotous public event across social media. From the two biggest talking points – the horrendous snub of critical smashes Selma and The Lego Movie – to the shocking amount of nominations for the divisive American Sniper, there was plenty of debate. The sheer volume of backlash wasn’t altogether surprising either, as the Academy are known for their conservative, ‘safe’ choices that often leave many in the film community baffled.
Now, thanks to The Shiznit, we have perhaps the best retort to the entire affair summed up in a series of cunning images. Paying homage to the showiest films nominated, the site’s main core of staff has orchestrated a gallery of truthful movie posters. Keeping in the spirit of the ‘Honest…’ movie trailers by the guys over at Screen Junkies, the UK-based movie hub has taken to Photoshop to doctor artwork from some of the year’s most-decorated titles. There’s nary a movie excused from their abrasive candour. All those included are granted the same treatment; plenty of sarcasm and fun-poking towards the filmmakers and just as much derision aimed at the Academy itself.
The working practices on the set of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood are jabbed at, while the film’s title is recycled as Puberty Timelapse. Also included in their honest take-down are American Sniper, Birdman, The Theory Of Everything, Selma, Foxcatcher and The Grand Budapest Hotel. However, my favorite is the Gone Girl poster: explicit, foul-mouthed and hilarious. A little like the film. Sort of.
Check out the truthful movie posters in the gallery above and let us know which ones are your favorite in the comments section.
