Creed 2 Will Focus On Adonis, Not Rocky

Creed charged into the ring and decimated everyone's expectations last year. A crowd-pleaser and critical darling, the Rocky reboot paid homage to Balboa, and introduced a new character to headline the series. That was of course, Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed, whose performance carried the movie and no doubt factored into the studio's decision to push forward with a sequel.

Creed charged into the ring and decimated everyone’s expectations last year. A crowd-pleaser and critical darling, the Rocky reboot paid homage to Balboa, and introduced a new character to headline the series. That was of course, Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed, whose performance carried the movie and no doubt factored into the studio’s decision to push forward with a sequel.

At this stage, all plans for Creed 2 are tentative, and we already know that director Ryan Coogler most likely won’t return due to his commitments on Marvel’s Black Panther. Well, what about Jordan? Seeing as it was Sylvester Stallone who snagged an Oscar nomination for his role, might that sway producers into rerouting the sequel back towards his character?

Apparently, that’s a negative. Producer Irvin Winkler confirmed to THR that plans to get moving on the sequel are beginning, and they revolve around the series’ newcomer:

“Next couple of weeks, we’ll start [working on it]. But basically it’s about Creed [rather than Rocky]. We think that there is really a story to examine the life of Adonis Creed, and we’re going ahead with it.”

This seems like the smarter choice for Creed 2, especially as Jordan’s turn was the most captivating element of the first movie. Choosing to amp up Rocky’s role to the point of making him the star? We’ve already had plenty of movies like that, haven’t we?
