In a strategy that in many ways defined Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the prestigious filmmaker brought Catwoman to the big screen for The Dark Knight Rises in a way that felt grounded, tangible and ultimately, consistent with both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
Slinking into the role of Selina Kyle circa 2012 was Anne Hathaway, who has now entertained the thought of one day reprising the Catwoman role in an interview with Variety (via CBM). First and foremost, the actress acknowledged that there would be certain creative roadblocks to overcome, given that Nolan’s tenure in Warner’s DC toy box has drawn to a close following the release of TDKR.
“I loved that character and I had such a blast playing her. I’m not sure how it would work because I think the Chris Nolan chapter of the Batman story has been wrapped up and I’m part of that, but I love the DC Universe and it would be fun to take a trip back.”
That means there’s a greater chance that Hathaway will wind up passing down the torch to another actress further down the line. How does this make the actress feel, though?
“It sort of goes with the territory when you accept it and receive it from the last Catwoman. I was shown such generosity from Halle [Berry] and from Michelle [Pfeiffer], and so I would do that the next time as well.”
At least for now, Catwoman doesn’t filter into the DC Extended Universe whatsoever, but with a solo Batman movie on the horizon, it’d be foolish to rule out the character entirely. Next up for Hathaway, though, is a trip to a Tokyo under siege for Colossal, Nacho Vigalondo’s unusual monster movie that is being readied for a premiere at TIFF 2016.
