Few topics in recent British history illicit such emotion as the 1984 miners’ strike. Under the controversial ruling of then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, scores of mining communities across the country were vilified and subsequently isolated following strikes over pay and poor working conditions. And so, many men, woman and children were left with little to no income as the country seemingly turned its back on the same people who served as the proverbial backbone during the industrial revolution.
In tandem with this movement, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rallied together to not only force the issue of gay rights into the British media, but to raise funds for those aforementioned coal miners affected by the cuts. It was an unusual union, no doubt, and one that serves as the core tenet for Matthew Warchus’ inspired true story, Pride.
Having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2012, the film has since gained traction in the industry thanks to its poignant and uplifting take on the subject matter. In our review, we found Pride to be an excellent and compassionate take on the 1984 miners’ strike, with a great ensemble cast that includes the likes of Paddy Considine, Dominic West and Professor Moriarty himself, Andrew Scott.
