Just days after its premiere at this year’s Cannes film festival, we have two new clips from John Hillcoat‘s prohibition drama Lawless. The reviews out of Cannes were all extremely positive and from we have seen so far with the trailer, a bunch of images and now these two new clips, it’s easy to understand why.
John Hillcoat created a name for himself back in 2005 with the fantastic Australian drama The Proposition, which he followed up with an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer winning novel The Road in 2009.
Lawless is based on the novel The Wettest County In The World, a beautifully written piece that I have had the pleasure to read. For those not familiar with the novel or the film, check out the plot summary below.
“Lawless is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel The Wettest County in the World, the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.”
As for the two clips released, the first one provides a great introduction to the evil-looking Special Agent Charlie Rakes played by Guy Pearce, the film’s antagonist. The second clip shows a heart to heart between Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy.
The film looks great, it has wonderful source material, features a fantastic cast, a talented director and an excellent composer in Australian musician Nick Cave. It is easy to see from the clips below why this film is one of the standouts at Cannes this year.
Lawless stars Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska and Jason Clarke and will be released on August 31st, 2012.
Check out the two clips below.
