The future is in flux for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as ABC has yet to give any official word on whether the Marvel spinoff TV series will return for a sixth season. Though rumor has it that the network has secretly ordered up another run behind the scenes and are just waiting to announce it, fans can’t rest easy until it’s 100% confirmed. Unfortunately, we don’t know when that’ll be and neither does the star of the show, Clark Gregg.
ComicBook.com caught up with Gregg at the premiere of Infinity War in L.A. where the long-running Marvel actor revealed that he has “questions about the future of the show.” From what he went on to say, it sounds like Coulson might not even survive to the end of season 5, as Gregg teased that repercussions from Phil’s past will come back to bite him, things that apparently have been discussed since the beginning of the series.
“I have questions about the future of the show and for Coulson. It’s been a really … there’s been some very dark developments, and from the minute Joss [Whedon] pitched me the show five years ago, it was clear that he wouldn’t be brought back to life without repercussions, and some of those are finally coming due. So, it’s a fun story arc to tell and it’s been a very moving ending of the season, and we’ll see what happens from here.”
The fact that Coulson could die again – more permanently this time – has been teased throughout season 5 of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was previously revealed that Phil’s deal with the Ghost Rider last season undid the Kree tech that had saved him from his fatal wound inflicted by Loki in The Avengers and now he’s slowly dying from that injury once again. A prophecy also states that the only way to save the world may be to let Coulson die.
There’s just a handful of episodes left of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s fifth season, so we should find out if this prophecy comes true in the next few weeks. What’s more, we’ve also been promised that the final episodes will deal with the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War, which should have major consequences for the show going forward. If it gets a sixth season, that is.
