It’s been almost six months since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises hit theaters and in that time Nolanites have waited with baited breath to see what the director’s next project would be. Well, the wait is now over as Nolan has found his next film in the form of Interstellar, written by none other than his brother, Jonathan Nolan.
Very little is known about the script at this point, but THR did have some plot details, which we’ve included below.
The project involves time travel and alternate dimensions in a story that sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech.
That sounds like a very complex, multi-layered story that has a ton of potential in the hands of a director like Nolan. We all saw the masterpiece he made out of Inception, so I’m very glad that he’s back in the sci-fi game.
Before this, little was known about what Nolan’s follow-up to his Dark Knight Trilogy would be, other than a rumor that the film would have Michael Caine in it. Little surprise there.
Interstellar is in the hands of Paramount, but with Nolan directing, Warner Bros. will also get in on the film, as that’s where Nolan’s Syncopy banner is based. He made all three Batman films as well as Inception and Insomnia for Syncopy.
As a Nolan fan, this is very exciting news. The project attracted both Spielberg (at one point) and Nolan, so it’s safe to assume that the story is something special. It’s also good to see Nolan working on a script written by his brother, considering the great success those two have had working together. Taking into account that much of the story is based on the theories of a Caltech physicist, it’s also safe to assume that the film is going to be something deeper and more intellectual than your typical blockbuster.
